Divers Look to Advance to NCAA’s at Zone ‘B’ Meet

AUBURN, Ala. — Three members of the LSU diving team will participate at the 2003 NCAA Zone B Diving Regional this weekend at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center in Auburn.

Senior All-American Barb Gorst and sophomore Jessica Wantz will compete on the women’s side and senior Kyle Van Arsdall will be the Tigers’ lone competitor on the men’s side.

The meet consists of 32 male divers and 40 female divers competing in the 1 and 3-meter springboard and the 10-meter platform competitions. Twelve women and 13 men advance to the NCAA Championships. On the men’s side, the top five in both the 1 and 3-meter advance, as well as the top three in the platform. For the women, the top four in the 1-meter, five in the 3-meter and the top three finishers in the platform advance.

The meet begins on Friday with the men’s 1-meter at 10 a.m. followed by the women’s 3-meter at 3:30 p.m. Saturday’s schedule includes the women’s 1-meter at 10 and the men’s 3-meter at 3:30. The meet concludes on Sunday with the women’s platform at 10 and the men’s platform at 12:30.

“This is a very important meet for our athletes because it is the last chance to qualify for the NCAA championships,” said LSU diving coach Doug Shaffer. “The competition is tough so we will have to dive our best to have a chance to qualify all three of our divers.”
