LAFAYETTE, La. — The LSU men’s golf team shot a final-round 5-over par 293 on Tuesday to finish eighth at the Louisiana Classics Intercollegiate at the Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette.
The Tigers finished at 17-over par 881 and had three golfers place in the top 25. SMU won the tournament with a 6-under par 858 total, finishing three strokes ahead of Texas A&M. Texas Tech and Baylor tied for fourth place at 10-over 874.
LSU, coming off a win at the LSU Spring Invitational last weekend, shot a season-best score of 6-under 282 on Monday in round two and was tied for sixth after 36 holes.
Sophomore Heath West had his second-straight top-10 finish, finishing tied for fifth at 3-under par 213. He tied for eighth place at the LSU Spring Invitational last weekend, and now has two top-10 finishes for the season. Fellow sophomore Tucker Ervin had his best-career finish, tying for 21st place at 2-over par 218. The Mt. Pleasant, S.C., native fired a career-low 4-under 68 in round two on Monday.
Senior John Humphries tied for 25th place at 4-over par 220 after shooting a 2-under 70 in the final round. Humphries won the individual title at the LSU Spring Invitational, his first-career tournament win. The 2001 All-SEC selection has finished outside the top 25 in just one tournament this season. LSU has had at least three golfers finish in the top 25 at the same tournament three times this season.
Freshman Aaron Smith tied for 75th place at 17-over par 233 and sophomore Jeff Riemann tied for 83rd place at 25-over par 241. Tulsa’s David Inglis won the individual title at 6-under par 208.
“We did not play with enough consistency today to really make any noise,” said LSU head coach Greg Jones. “Both John (Humphries) and Heath (West) have really been playing well but we need to get consistent scoring from all five guys to really get it done,” said Jones.
The Tigers will turn right around on Wednesday and hit the road again, traveling to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to participate in the Conrad Rehling Spring Invitational hosted by Alabama at the Capstone Club. The tournament will feature 18 holes each day from Fri. March 14-Sun. March 16. LSU is paired with Michigan State for the first day and will tee off at 11:20 a.m.
