AUSTIN, Texas — Twelve members of the LSU swimming team competed in the Texas Bevo Invitational on Saturday evening at the Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin.
Nine women and three men swam against both host Texas and Texas A&M in LSU’s final tuneup before heading into the upcoming NCAA championships later in the month.
In the last chance to qualify for the upcoming NCAA championships, three swimmers made “B” cut times for the 2003 NCAA Championships. Laura Jo Leininger swam the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 54.43 for the “B” cut, senior Cissy Schepens swam the 200-yard breaststroke in a “B” cut-time of 2″14.25, and freshman Megan Wolters swam the 200-back in a time of 2:01.14. Mike Jotautas and Margaret Beadle both barely missed the “B” cut in their events.
None of the swimmers are guaranteed spots in the NCAA championships due to the fact that the “B” cuts are only provisional marks. The only guaranteed times are “A” cuts, of which LSU has two this season.
Next up for LSU is the 2003 NCAA Diving Regional on March 14-15 in Auburn, Ala. The women’s NCAA championships will be held on March 20-22 also in Auburn, and the men’s championships will be held in Austin, Texas from March 27-29.
