ATLANTA — LSU’s 24th-ranked doubles team comprised of Bryan Fisher and Jason Hazley recorded two vital victories on Sunday to earn the doubles title at the 2003 Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships here in Atlanta, Ga.
“Bryan and Jason really played hard today and they came up with two huge wins over some extremely talented opponents,” said LSU head coach Jeff Brown. “All weekend they played with some really good intensity and they were able to come up with the solid shots in the close matches. This should be a good springboard for them heading into dual play.”
After defeating Georgia’s combination of Bo Hodge and Nicolas Boeker, 9-8(5), in the semifinal match on Sunday, LSU’s duo of Fisher and Hazley dropped Vanderbilt’s tandem of Chad Harris and Scott Brown to earn the doubles crown of the SEC Indoor Championships.
With the 8-6 victory, Fisher/Hazley completed play in the prestigious four-day event with an undefeated 5-0 record. Fisher, a junior from Nashville, Tenn., and Hazley, a native of Bradenton, Fla., combine to form the nation’s No. 24-ranked doubles team and own an impressive 9-2 record on the season.
“We had a very successful weekend,” Brown said. “I think that Peter (Richman) did an excellent job in the singles tournament and even our guys that lost played well and improved. Paul (White) had a big win on the first day and we’re looking good at this point in the season.”
The LSU men’s tennis team will next be in action on Saturday, Jan. 25, as the Tigers open up dual-match play with a doubleheader against Centenary and Southern beginning at 10 a.m. at the W.T. “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium.
Admission is free to all LSU home tennis matches.
