Five Men's Tennis Players Begin ITA Region III Play
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Five LSU men’s tennis players will begin competition in the 2002 Region III Indoor Championships on Friday, as the first round of singles play is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. here at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex in Lexington, Ky.
“This is another good opportunity for our guys to gain some experience against many of the top players in the nation,” said LSU head coach Jeff Brown. “This region is definitely one of the best regions in the country as far as tennis talent goes, and a few wins here and there can give us a lot of confidence heading into the dual season.”
Competing for LSU in the prestigious four-day championship event will be juniors Bryan Fisher and Sebastian Rutka, sophomores Jason Hazley and Peter Richman, as well as freshman Paul White.
White, the Tigers’ highly-touted recruit from Lake Charles, La., earned a spot in the main draw of the singles tournament on Thursday by defeating both Mississippi State’s Matt Armstrong, 6-2, 6-3, and Emir Basic of Troy State, 7-6(7), 5-7, 6-0, in qualifying matches. With the victories, White upped his overall record on the season to 4-3.
LSU’s Rafael Corazza fell in the first round of qualifying action on Thursday against Tulane’s Goran Vasiljvic in straight sets. Vasiljvic outlasted Corazza, 7-5, 6-3.
