White, Espinal Win on Final Day of Prince Cup

COLUMBUS, Ohio — LSU women’s tennis players, Bonnie White and Daysi Espinal, each picked up wins in the singles consolation bracket of the 2002 Ohio State Prince Cup on Sunday here in Columbus, Ohio.

“A win is a win and you should want to win every time that you step on the court,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “Honestly, our girls had nothing to play for but pride out there today, and I give Bonnie and Daysi a lot of credit for playing with a lot of intensity. They played hard and they got the job done.”

White, the Lady Tigers’ sophomore from New Iberia, dropped Ohio State’s Emily Howard in a three-set marathon, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (7), while Espinal defeated Penn State’s Maaria Husain in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5.

Espinal, LSU’s highly-touted freshman from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, ended the three-day event with an overall record of 2-1.

The LSU women’s tennis team will next be in action on Saturday, Sept. 28, as the Lady Tigers travel to Houston, Texas, to compete in the 2002 Rice Invitational.
