Duncan Eliminated in Quarterfinal Round of Western

BLUEFIELD, Va. — Shreveport and former LSU golfer Meredith Duncan’s attempt to three-peat the Women’s Western Golf Association amateur championship came crashing down Friday morning.

Duncan, the two-time defending champion of the event, lost in Friday’s round of eight to Janice Olivencia of Gurabo, Puerto Rico, 2 and 1.

The loss was only Duncan’s second in the last 25 matches over the last 13 months in amateur tournaments.

Duncan now moves on to attempt to defend her North-South Amateur title won a year ago at the famed Pinehurst Country Club. Qualifying for the 32-player field for match play is Monday and Tuesday, but Duncan as the defending champion, is automatically seeded into the match play portion of that tournament.

LSU junior to be Devon Day of Greer, S. C., was able to win her quarterfinal match in flight one, 3&2, over Amber Marsh.
