BATON ROUGE — The Southeastern Conference baseball game between LSU and Mississippi State scheduled for Sunday at Alex Box Stadium has been canceled due to heavy rains. Under SEC policy, the LSU-MSU game cannot be rescheduled.
The rain reached the Baton Rouge area just before 6 a.m., and continued throughout the morning, leaving standing water on the playing field. The decision to call the game was made by LSU game management officials at 10 a.m.
This marks the third time since 1997 that LSU has lost a Sunday SEC game to the elements, joining a 1997 home game against Auburn and a 2000 contest at Vanderbilt.
The Tigers and Bulldogs split the two games that were played in the series, with MSU winning 15-4 on Friday and LSU rebounding for a 7-3 triumph on Saturday.
LSU (17-12, 3-5 SEC) returns to action on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. when the Tigers host New Orleans. After an exhibition game against the New Orleans Zephyrs on Wednesday in Metairie, the Tigers resume to SEC play this weekend at Auburn.
MSU (14-9-1, 4-4) is in action again Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Smith-Willis Stadium in Jackson against archrival Ole Miss in the annual Mayor’s Trophy game before hosting Georgia next weekend in an SEC series.
