Softball Beats Northwestern St. to Win Tiger Classic, 2-1

Game 12 Box Score

BATON ROUGE — Britni Sneed pitched a complete-game no-hitter on to lead LSU to a 2-0 victory over Western Michigan in bracket play in the LSU Tiger Classic on Sunday morning.

The accomplishment is the third complete-game no-hitter of her career and first this inning. She struck out 12 in the game and walked just two.

The Tigers got on the board early as April Janzen took advantage of a Western Michigan error to give LSU the lead. She reached when shortstop Angie Fiero booted a grounder. Christy Connor then doubled down the right field line to bring the run home.

LSU was shut down until the fifth when Blair Smith scored an insurance run while pinch running for Jessica Braggins, who walked. Leigh Ann Danos led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Jennie Reeves came into pinch run and remained at second when Braggins walked.

Aleshia Perry moved Smith to second on a fielder’s choice in which Reeves was tagged out. Leadoff hitter Trena Peel then singled in Smith.

BATON ROUGE — Amanda Ortega hurled a two-hit shutout as Northwestern State upset No. 19 DePaul, 4-0, to move into the championship game of the LSU Tiger Classic against the host Tigers.

Ortega struck out eight and walked two in shutting down a Blue Demon line up that had scored 33 runs in its previous four games.

Northwestern State got the scoring going in the bottom of the second when Alisha Cory turned a lead off single into a run. She moved to second on a ground out and to third on Shay Hunt’s single.

Cory scored on Jana Strickland’s fielder’s choice when she beat the throw to the plate.

In the fifth, the Demons added an insurance run on an April Valdez error.

Nicole Martin, who scored the run, knocked a two-out single to get on base and then moved to third when Kiana Scott reached on an infield single.

Martin came home when Valdez couldn’t cleanly come up with the ball off of Jamie Frasier’s bat.

Northwestern State added two more runs in the sixth inning when Annie Johnston singled home Hunt and Cory.

DePaul used two pitchers, Sarah Martz and Lindsey Chouinard. Martz gave up one run while Chouinard gave up three, all unearned.

Game 14 Box Score

BATON ROUGE — Facing a Northwestern State team fresh off an upset of No. 19 DePaul, the LSU softball team withstood the best shot the Demons had to take a 2-1 victory in the championship game of the LSU Tiger Classic.

Kristin Schmidt pitched six innings, giving up only one run and Britni Sneed came in to shut the door in the seventh.

All of LSU’s offense came in the third inning as Aleshia Perry and Trena Peel each scored following errors by shortstop Shay Hunt.

Perry singled with one out and moved to third on a throwing error by Hunt.

Peel then reached on a fielder’s choice as pitcher Crista Miller tried to pick Perry off third on the play.

On the throw to third, Peel began towards second before getting caught in a rundown. She eventually advanced to second after Hunt dropped the ball, which also allowed Perry to score.

Peel then stole third and scored on a passed ball to provide the eventual winning run.

Northwestern State scored in the fourth as Nicole Martin and Kiana Scott led off the inning with back-to-back singles. A double steal moved the runners to second and third with one out.

Lindsay Leftwich singled to center to plate Martin, but Peel’s throw was right on the money as LSU catcher Jennie Reeves tagged out Scott trying to tie the game.
