Baseball Tigers Come Back to Beat Alumni, 4-3

BATON ROUGE — LSU scored two runs in the eighth inning on wild pitches, erasing a 3-2 deficit and lifting the Tigers to a 4-3 victory over the Alumni squad Saturday in Alex Box Stadium.

The exhibition contest matched the 2002 LSU squad against a team of former Tiger players now active in professional baseball.

LSU opens the 2002 regular season at 6:30 p.m. Friday against Birmingham Southern in Alex Box Stadium.

Catcher Dustin Weaver and center fielder J.C. Holt started the LSU eighth inning with back-to-back singles against Alumni reliever Rick Greene.

Weaver stole third base before scoring on a Greene wild pitch to deadlock the game at 3-3.

Holt later scored the go-ahead run on another wild pitch from Greene.

The Alumni team had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth inning on a two-run double by first baseman Jeff Leaumont.

LSU collected 14 hits in the contest, including a 3-for-3 outing by designated hitter Eric Wiethorn.

Right-hander Jake Tompkins was credited with the victory for LSU, as he worked the final two innings, surrendering two runs on four hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

Tompkins fanned second baseman Mike Fontenot with a runner at first base to end the game.

Greene took the loss for the Alumni squad, as he was charged with two runs on two hits with one walk and one strikeout in the eighth inning.
