BATON ROUGE — DePaul sent 12 batters to the plate in the second inning as eight runs scored en route to a 17-0 victory over Jackson State in the first game of the second day of the Tiger Classic.
Sarah Martz carried a perfect game into the fifth inning, but hit Kara Blaylock to open the inning. She lost the no-hit bid on the next batter when Makida Zackery singled deep to center field. A bunt single by Delaney MacLean loaded the bases with one out.
However, a strike out and a ground out to third ended the game.
Martz also provided much of the offense as she went 2-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored in the leadoff position. As a team, DePaul pounded out 15 hits and took advantage of four Lady Tiger errors to score its runs.
BATON ROUGE — Northwestern State posted 10 runs in the first three innings and Crista Miller pitched four scoreless innings as the Demons downed Jackson State, 10-0, in the LSU Tiger Classic.
The win was the first for Northwestern State (4-5) in the tournament. The Lady Tigers fell to 0-4 in the tournament, which is also their overall season record.
Jackson State didn’t help itself defensively as it committed five errors, three of which led directly to runs. In the first at-bat of the game, Annie Johnston singled and came all the way around to score as an errant throw ended up in the right field corner.
Nicole Martin notched three hits in three at-bats and scored three runs to pace the Demon offense.
Miller allowed just two hits before Amanda Ortego came in to strike out the side in the fifth.
BATON ROUGE — All-American pitcher Britni Sneed rebounded from a rough performance on Friday to lead LSU to a 3-1 victory over Northwestern State on Saturday in the LSU Tiger Classic.
Sneed, who allowed five runs in just 1 1/3 innings against DePaul on Friday, rebounded to hold the Demons to one runs and just four hits. In the process, she struck out 14 while walking one.
The Tigers scored runs in the third and fifth inning en route to the victory. In the third, Trena Peel walked and then stole second to get into scoring position with one out. After an April Janzen ground out advanced her to third, she scored when Christy Connor reached on an error.
Two innings later, Peel again led off the inning with a walk. A Janzen single moved her to third before she scored on freshman Tessa Lynam’s two-run single.
Northwestern State mounted a small threat in the top of the seventh as Lindsay Leftwich led off with a single to right field. After Shea LeDoux came into pinch run, she moved to second on a wild pitch.
A Krystle Nichols single scored LeDoux, but Sneed struck out pinch hitter Tracye Thompson to end the game.
BATON ROUGE — Pitcher Lindsay Chouinard carried a perfect game down to the final out before having it broken up as she ked DePaul to a 6-0 win over Western Michigan on Saturday afternoon in the LSU Tiger Classic.
Chouinard’s bid for perfection was broken up by Holly Seales, who slapped a singled to left field. It was the only base runner in the game for the Broncos, which lost for the first time this season.
DePaul put up a run in the first and third innings before erupting for four in the fifth. Sarah Martz got the rally going with a single. After she stole second, Liz Bouck advanced her to third with a single. Shavaughne Desecki then knocked an RBI single. Saskia Roberson hit a two-run double to score Bouck and Desecki. Roberson eventually came home on a Gina Ramacci ground out.
Julie Brewster started for Western Michigan and allowed all six runs in four innings of work. Leah Seffernick came in for two scoreless innings and Laura Stewart pitched a scoreless seventh.
DePaul totaled 14 hits en route to the six runs. The Demons also took advantage of two Bronco errors.
BATON ROUGE — Kristin Schmidt pitched a three-hit shutout and LSU scored four runs in the fifth as the Tigers beat Western Michigan, 5-0, in their final game of round-robin play in the LSU Tiger Classic.
Schmidt struck out 13, including the final five batters she faced, while not walking a single batter in the game in winning her first game as a Tiger.
LSU struck in the bottom of the fifth inning when Julie Wiese drew a lead-off walk. She stole second to set up an RBI double down the left field line by Jennie Reeves.
Reeves moved to third on Blair Smith’s single, which was just over the outstretched arms of Broncos’ third-baseman Holly Seales. Sara Fitzgerald struck out before Trena Peel laced a 1-1 pitch to the rightfield wall, scoring both Reeves and Smith.
April Janzen then singled up the middle to score Peel as the Tigers lead extended to 4-0. A Tessa Lynam foul out and a Megann Steege strike out ended the inning before anymore damage could be done.
Wiese scored again in the fifth when Fitzgerald singled her home from third. Wiese drew a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on Smith’s ground out to set up the run.
Fitzgerald and Smith were each 2-for-3 on the day to pace the LSU offense.
Western Michigan’s best scoring chance came in the fourth when Heather Frederick doubled down the left field line to open the inning. Marie McCarthy’s single put runners on the corner’s with one out.
After Jessica Gibson came in to pinch run for Frederick, Schmidt struck out Gina Dobbs and Leslee Szekely to end the inning.
