LAFAYETTE, La. — LSU freshman tennis sensations Jason Hazley and Peter Richman each won four consecutive matches on Saturday to meet in Sunday’s flight “A” final match of the 2001 Cingular Wireless Collegiate Tennis Classic in Lafayette, La. On Sunday, Hazley won the final, 6-2, 6-4, over his teammate.

Hazley, from Bradenton, Fla., cruised through the first two rounds with straight-sets victories over Edgar Gonzales of Lamar, 6-1, 6-4, and fourth-seeded Viktor Loven of New Orleans, 7-6, 7-6. In the quarterfinals, Hazley defeated UL-Lafayette’s Johann van der Westhuizen when he defaulted down 2-0 in the third set. Richman, a native of Toronto, Canada, also had a straight-sets victory, 7-6, 6-3, over Derrick Spice of Wake Forest in the first round before fighting through three sets to beat Southern Miss’ David Jansson, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, in the second round. The then went on to top home-favorite Anthony Blake of ULL, 6-2, 6-4, before advancing to the final with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, win over Southern Miss’ Uwe Gneiting in the semifinals.

LSU sophomore Bryan Fisher fell in the first round of the tournament to Southeastern Louisiana’s Paul Birkett, 7-6, 2-6, 6-0, while junior Brandon Nicholson advanced to the quarterfinals before being defeated by Gneiting, 6-0, 6-2.
