FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The LSU swimming and diving team placed third in the final day of the SEC West Quad Meet on Saturday at the Arkansas Natatorium in Fayetteville.
The Quad meet consisted of three different meets, each scored separately for both men and women. Friday’s meet was off distance events and relays, and today was distance swim and numerous other events.
The Tigers finished the day with 554 points, in third place behind Arkansas and Auburn. LSU finished with the highest point total on Friday in the first segment of the meet with 432 points. Auburn finished second behind LSU on Friday with 429. The meet today, the distance swim, featured the 3,000-yard freestyle, and the last part of the meet consisted of 16 events.
LSU’s Stephanie Smith placed first in the women’s 3,000-yard freestyle on Saturday with a time of 31:26.29. Auburn’s James Galloway finished first in the men’s 3000 with a time of 29:27.46. Myles Jaynes and Dennis Rowe finished third and fourth for LSU. The course for the 3000 was two 25 yard courses with two swimmers in each lane. LSU’s women earned 30 points Saturday to place third, 23 behind Alabama. LSU’s men finished first with 38 points, 10 ahead of Alabama.
Smith also finished second in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:18.22. Jaynes finished second in the 1000 for the men with a time of 9:33.13. Lindsay Staak placed second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of :57.85. Evan Martinec won the 100-backstroke with a time of :49.86. Mandy Leach won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:05.04.
LSU’s team of Matt Rucker, Fransisco Paez, Chris Stanczyk and Reed Robelot finished first in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
“We had a pretty good day overall”, said LSU head coach Jeff Cavana. “We are in good shape at this point in the season and I am very proud of all our athletes so far.”
The Tigers will next head to Tuscaloosa, Ala. on Nov. 2 to face Alabama. LSU’s next home meet is not until January, 2002.
