BATON ROUGE — LSU linebacker Trev Faulk has been named the Southeastern Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Faulk, a junior from Lafayette, La., registered 13 tackles, seven solo, in LSU’s 42-0 SEC road win over Mississippi State on Saturday. The 13 tackles were Faulk’s second-highest total of the year and ran his season total to 63 tackles.
The shutout was the first on the road in SEC play for the Tigers since a 27-0 victory over Alabama in Tuscaloosa in 1997.
Against Mississippi State, Faulk led an LSU defense that limited the Bulldogs to only 74 yards rushing. The Bulldogs, who were shutout at home for the first time in Jackie Sherrill’s 11 years as head coach, penetrated inside the red zone just one time in the contest. The Tigers defense also forced four Mississippi State turnovers which resulted in 28 points.
Faulk, who is a semifinalist for the Butkus Award, also added a pair of quarterback pressures in the contest.
The SEC Player of the Week award is the first of Faulk’s career.
Tennessee quarterback Casey Clausen, the brother of LSU freshman quarterback Rick Clausen, earned the league’s offensive player of the week award after passing for 293 yards and two touchdowns in the Vols’ 35-24 win over Alabama.
