DAYTON, Ohio — The LSU swimming and diving team beat Wright State Saturday afternoon at Dayton, Ohio to complete a perfect 3-0 weekend.
The LSU women beat Wright St. ,137-78, and the men also won by a score of 135-86. On Friday LSU won three of four in their meet in Knoxville, Tenn., against Tennessee and Kentucky. The only loss suffered by LSU Friday was to the Tennessee men.
Sophomore Stephanie Smith continued her success with one win and one second place finish. Smith won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 156:18, and finished second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.98. Friday Smith won both the 1000 and 500-yard freestyle. In LSU’s first two meets of the season, last weekend in Baton Rouge, Smith won four events.
Freshman Margot Gathings and sophomore Cackey Miltenberger finished second and third behind Smith in the 200. LSU’s team of Lindsay Staak, Lauren Ostroski, Laura Jo Leininger and Margaret Anne Moore won the women’s 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:51.05. Evan Martinec, Matt Rucker, Nick Tarantino, and Chris Stanczyk won the men’s 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:35.94. Staak also won the 100-yard backstroke with a score of 59.15.
Tarantino won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.07, and freshman Myles Jaynes won the men’s 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 4:43.86.
Sophomore Donna Leslie finished first in the 100-yard freestyle. Leslie’s time was 54.92. Mike Jotauntas won the 100-yard backstroke with a score of 53.99.
In the diving competition LSU’s All-American Michelle Coryell won the women’s one-meter diving competition with a score of 277.65. Lady Tiger Barb Gorst finished second with a score of 276.90. Kyle Van Ardsall won the men’s side for LSU with a score of 312.45 in the one-meter. Van Ardsall also won the three-meter diving with a score of 313.65. LSU’s Jessica Wantz placed first in the three-meter with a score of 283.43. Gorst and Coryell finished second and third behind Wantz.
LSU improved to 4-0 on the season with the win on Saturday. The next scheduled meet is The SEC Quad Meet Oct. 26-27 at Fayetteville, Ark. The Tigers will face Arkansas, Auburn and Alabama at the meet. The LSU women beat Arkansas in Baton Rouge on Oct. 13 by a score of 159-86.
