Swimming Intrasquad Scheduled For Friday

BATON ROUGE — The LSU men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will open the 2001-02 season with the 13th-annual Purple and Gold Intrasquad Meet Friday at the LSU natatorium.

The meet will begin at 3 p.m. and will be comprised of 24 events. The teams for the meet were chosen Thursday by the captains of each team. The Purple Team’s Captains are Senior Mandy Leach and Junior Jace Pitre. Assistant Swimming coach Lars Jorgensen will coach the Purple Team. The Gold Team Captain is Junior Mike Jotautas. Amanda Norton and Neal Satterly will coach the Gold Team.

Norton is a new addition to the LSU staff. Norton comes to LSU from Eastern Michigan, where she was an assistant coach. The coaches and captains will decide on what relays to include in the meet Friday.

“This meet will be a good indicator of where we are right now”, said head coach Jeff Cavana. “This is the last meet where we will be apart, after this we will be together for the rest of the season.”

The two teams will work out on opposite ends of the natatorium Friday morning in preparation for the meet. Swimmers may swim only three events each, two of which must be individual events. Divers will compete in two events each, the one and three-meter events.

In last year’s meet, the teams tied with a score of 210. The team’s also tied in 1998 and 1991. The LSU women will face Houston on Oct. 12 at the LSU Natatorium, and then will welcome Arkansas on Oct. 13.

“This meet will give us a better idea of who will travel this season, because of 20 can go on the road. I expect everyone to really enjoy the competitiveness of this event, it is a good way to begin the season.”
