NASHVILLE — The LSU women’s golf team, struggled in the opening rounds of the season opening golf tournament, the Mason Rudolph Championships at The Legends Course here Monday, ending the first day in 10th place.
The Tigers and the rest of the field will play the final round of the 54-hole event on Tuesday.
Host Vanderbilt showed its knowledge of the par 72 course, following a morning seven over 295 with a 4-under 284 in the afternoon round to finish at 3-over 579 for the 36 holes. Ohio State had the lead after the opening round with a 291 score, but its 4-over 292 in the afternoon wasn’t enough to keep pace and they fell to 583 in second, one shot better than Furman at 584.
There is a 12-shot gap back to the tie for fourth between Alabama and North Carolina at 596.
LSU opened with a 313, 25 over par, but was able to cut that in half in the afternoon round and get back with a 301 to stand at 614 for 10th in the 14-team field.
Jennifer Perri of Furman is the individual leader at 4-under par 140 (71-69), two shots ahead of Nicki Cutler of Vandy (74-68 – 142 -2).
Isabel Dornellas, the sophomore from Rio de Janeiro, was the best for the LSU women with a two-round total of 4-over 148 with rounds of 76-72. Dornellas in the afternoon round was 4-under over the final 9 holes of play. She is tied for 14th in the individual competition.
United States Amateur Champion Meredith Duncan of Shreveport struggled out of the box with a seven-over 79, but rallied for a 2-over 74 in the afternoon to stand at 153, tied for 31st. Dallas freshman Brooke Shelton was third in line for LSU in scoring at 156, tied for 48th.
