BATON ROUGE — Senior quarterback Rohan Davey completed 12 of 20 passes for 150 yards and junior linebacker Trev Faulk recorded five tackles as LSU went through its second and final scrimmage of fall camp here Wednesday night in Tiger Stadium.
The Tigers worked on a variety of situations during the two-hour scrimmage, including the two-minute drill, work in the red area and third-down situations. The defense also spent time working against a no-huddle offense.
“We didn’t do a whole lot of hitting out there tonight, but the hitting that we did do I thought was all right,” LSU coach Nick Saban said. “The defense was pretty aggressive and enthusiastic and they got some turnovers. We tackled pretty well for the most part and we put some pressure on the quarterback. I was pleased with the way the defense played in this scrimmage.
“Offensively I don’t think we were as sharp as what I would have like us to be. Rohan (Davey) just played two series and did a great job when he was out there. He moved around in the pocket when he had to and we were really pleased with his performance.”
Saban also praised LSU backup quarterbacks Marcus Randall and Matt Mauck. Mauck completed 6 of 17 passes for 111 yards, while Randall connected on 6 of 16 passes for 45 yards.
“The other two quarterbacks (Randall and Mauck) made good plays a times and I’m sure they both had some plays that they would like to have back,” Saban said. “They just have to continue to progress as quarterbacks and not worry about who is going to be second string and third string. If they get an opportunity they need to look at it a s a good opportunity and be ready to take advantage of it and be positive.”
Devery Henderson led all running backs with 34 yards and one touchdown on six carries, while freshman Joseph Addai had 16 yards on eight attempts.
LaBrandon Toefield carried three times for 12 yards, while Derron Parquet had 11 yards on four rushes.
Josh Reed led all receivers with six receptions for 60 yards, while Blain Bech had three receptions for 67 yards. Marcus Spears, Jerel Meyers, Robert Royal and Corey Webster each caught two passes in the scrimmage.
LSU will take Thursday off before returning to the practice field on Friday. The Tigers open their season on Saturday, Sept. 1 when they play host to Tulane at 7 p.m. in Tiger Stadium.
