WICHITA, Kan. — LSU senior Meredith Duncan continued to dominate, winning two more matches to advance to Friday’s semifinals of the 101st United States Women’s Amateur Golf Championships at the Flint Hill National Golf Course.
Duncan, in her three match play events this year, the Women’s Western Amateur and the North-South (both of which Duncan won), the Trans-National and the first four matches of the U.S. Amateur, Duncan is 18-1 in match play.
The Shreveport native’s semifinal match with Emily Basel of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, will be carried on ESPN Friday beginning at 2 p.m. CDT.
The USGA is showing a tee time for the match of 10:15 a.m. CDT. The live scoring of the match can be found on the tournament’s Internet site, www.uswamateur.org.
Bastel upset four-time Stanford All-American Hilary Homeyer, 2-up.
Duncan posted a 3-under par 69 in the opening match of the day, including a birdie on the par-5 18th to win 2 and 1 over Lisa Ferrero of Lodi, Calif. Duncan had a 3UP lead in the match after the 13th hole which she kept until the 16th when Ferrero won 16 with a bogey and 17 with a birdie to send Duncan to the 18th for the first time in match play in these championships.
With the ESPN cameras rolling on her quarterfinal match, Duncan birdied the par 5 first hole for the third time in four matches to go 1 Up on University of Washington senior Kelli Kamimura of Burlington, Wash.
Duncan’s bogey on another 100-degree afternoon on the second allowed Kamimura to even the match, but again, the Duncan machine cranked up.
A birdie at the 321-yard sixth got Duncan, whose father David is caddying for her this week, to 2UP, a margin the LSU golfer held with pars over the next three holes, before birdies on both the 143-yard 10th and 487-yard 11th pushed the advantage to 4UP.
Kamimura would close to 3UP but Duncan with two putts from 30 feet to win the match at the 16th, rolled the ball to six inches and Kamimura conceded the match.
