Duncan Ties For Metalist Honors at U.S. Amateur Qualifying

WICHITA, Kan. — LSU senior women’s golfer Meredith Duncan and her Auburn rival Celeste Troche tied for medalist honors Tuesday after 36 holes of qualifying for match play in the 101st United States Women’s Amateur golf championship at the Flint Hills National Golf Club.

Duncan posted a two-over 73 on another hot, windy Kansas day to finish 70-73 and 1-over par 143. Troche, who is from Paraquay, opened with a 2-under 69, but shot a 3-over 74 on Tuesday to fall back into a tie with Duncan.

Troche, because of having the first score in, will be the number one seed in the 64-player match play bracket, with Duncan anchoring the lower half of the bracket as the number two seed. Both Troche and Duncan, from Shreveport, did not know their opponents as of press time as only 62 slots were secured for the championship bracket at 13-over par 155 or better.

Another nine players at 14-over par were in the midst of a playoff for the final two spots.

The plan is for two rounds of match play on Wednesday before two more on Thursday when the quarterfinals will be televised by ESPN at 2 p.m. The semifinals will be played on Friday and the championship is scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

LSU’s other golfer in the field, Lindy Hitdlebaugh, was unable to get anything going on the second day as she fell back to an 85 and finished 77-85, 20-over 162, tied for 103rd in the field.
