BATON ROUGE — Bill Dailey, who has served as the baseball volunteer coach since 1998, announced Tuesday he will not return to LSU for the 2002 season. Dailey said he plans to pursue a full-time coaching position at another school.

“I want to thank everyone at LSU, the coaches, players and fans, for all the support they have given me over the past four seasons,” Dailey said. “I love this school, and I have enjoyed my time here immensely. But, in order for me to keep my career moving forward, I need to explore some new options.”

As LSU’s volunteer coach from 1998-2001, Dailey served as the third-base coach, and he supervised the Tigers’ infielders and base running. He helped lead LSU to two College World Series appearances (1998, 2000), including the 2000 NCAA title.

A former catcher at Old Dominion University, Dailey came to LSU after serving four seasons as an assistant coach at Montgomery (Md.) Junior College.

Dailey, 33, a native of Hornell, N.Y., was married earlier this month to the former Kim Pylant of Baton Rouge.

“I’m excited about the opportunities that are available to me,” Dailey said. “It’s time for a change, though I will always cherish my experiences at LSU.”
