Warren Morris and Lyle Mouton joined Major League rosters while Blair Barbier and Eddy Furniss had big weeks and they remain hot in Single-A among former Tigers in the minors.
Morris is back in the majors after being called up by the Pittsburgh Pirates this past week. Since his arrival in Pittsburgh, Morris has batted .105 (2 of 19) with one RBI.
A second Tiger joined a major league team this past week, Lyle Mouton has begun his duty with the Florida Marlins. He has batted .059 (1 of 17) with one RBI in his brief tenure with the Marlins.
Bryan Moore has raised his average to .205 (9 of 78) in Johnson City, Tenn. (Cardinals, Rookie League). Neither Jason Scobie (Brooklyn Cyclones -Mets, Single-A) nor Roy Corcoran (Gulf Coast Expos, Rookie) saw action on the mound this week for their respective clubs.
Four Tigers are in Triple-A this week:
Brandon Larson (Louisville, Reds-AAA) raised his average six points to .247 (71 of 288). Larson has 3 home runs and 39 RBI.
Harry Berrios (Oklahoma City -Rangers, AAA raised his average to .251 with six home runs and 28 RBI.
Kurt Ainsworth Fresno (Giants, AAA) dropped his only decision this week to fall to 6-8 on the season. In 109.1 innings pitched, Ainsworth has a 5.19 ERA and 110 strikeouts.
Brett Laxton (Omaha-Royals, AAA) also lost his only decision of the week. He sports a 2-4 record and a 4.70 ERA in 67.0 innings pitched.
Five former LSU Tigers are playing in Double-A this week.
Brad Cresse’s (El Paso -Diamondbacks, AA) average dropped eight points down to .265 (82 of 310) with eight home runs and 49 RBI.
Ryan Jorgensen (West Tennessee -Cubs, AA) has been slow out of the gates in Double-A. After beginning the summer in Dayton, Fla. (Cubs, A) and batting .282 in 54 games, Jorgensen is batting a .050 (1 of 20) since being sent up to Double-A.
Doug Thompson (Carolina-Rockies, AA). Thompson is 1-2 with a 3.45 ERA in 19.0 innings pitched. He began the 2001 season in Salem (Rockies, High A) where he posted a 2-2 record and a 4.02 ERA in 17 games before being called up to Double-A.
Patrick Coogan (New Haven Ravens-Cardinals, AA) lost his only start this week and fell to 8-6. He’s thrown 115.2 innings of work with a 5.14 ERA.
Chris Demouy (Arkansas Travelers-Angels, AA) saw little action this past week. He has a 2-0 record and a 6.21 ERA in 29 innings pitched.
LSU has eight players competing in Single-A.
Blair Barbier (Lansing-Cubs, A). had an power explosion this past week belting four home runs. He is batting .334 (113 of 338) with 12 home runs and 52 RBI.
Eddy Furniss (Visalia, Calif.-Athletics, A) has heated up and raised his average significantly to .346 with 16 home runs and 45 RBI. Furniss played 15 games with the Midland (Texas) Rockhounds where he batted only .204 in April before moving to California.
Cedrick Harris also began the season batting .204 in 16 games with the Double-A El Paso Diablos before being demoted to Lancaster, Calif. (Diamondbacks, A). Harris improved his numbers up to .276 (53 of 192) with five home runs and 25 RBI.
Brad Hawpe (Asheville-Rockies, A) Hawpe’s average fell to .261 (66-253). He has 16 doubles, 15 home runs and 53 RBI.
Jeff Leaumont (Tampa-Yankees,A) is batting .244 (60 of 246) with six home runs and 21 RBI this season.
Trey Hodges (Myrtle Beach-Braves,A) won his only start this week and continues to look sharp. With the win the 2000 CWS MVP improves to 11-5 with a 3.18 ERA in 116 innings of work. Hodges has struck out 88 batters while walking only 14.
Brian Tallet (Kinston-Indians, A) pitched only five innings this past week. He maintains a 7-5 record, with a 2.67 ERA in 121.1 innings pitched.
Heath McMurray (Ogden, Utah-Brewers,R) earned a victory evening his record at 2-2. McMurray has a 3.50 ERA in 18 innings pitched.
