BATON ROUGE — LSU softball first baseman Megann Steege was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week as announced by the league’s office on Monday.
“Megann has come along way since the fall,” said LSU hitting coach James DeFeo. “She is one of the most dedicated and hardworking players on the team. This weekend was a testament to her persistence. We hope that she continues to get better as the season progresses. We look for big things from Megann, not only this season, but in her career. We have always known that she was a great hitter; now it is showing on the field.”
The sophomore led the Tigers in hitting, batting .556 with five RBI and three runs for the weekend in LSU’s sweep of Tennessee. Steege had the game-winning RBI versus the Lady Vols in extra innings of game two to lead LSU to a 2-1 win. She then started game three with two RBI in the first inning and one more in next at bat to get LSU started in the 9-0 win over Tennessee.
The Fresno, Calif., native was perfect in the field with 23 putouts and one assist and leads the Tigers with an SEC batting average of .429. Steege improved her overall average 124 points in the three-game series to .267.
This is the first time that Steege has received this honor, and the third time that LSU has had a player named SEC player/pitcher of the week. Junior Britni Sneed has earned the honor of pitcher of the week on two previous occasions during the season.
Steege and the Tigers are preparing for a 10-day spring break road trip with stops at South Carolina, Coastal Carolina and Georgia. LSU will face the Lady Gamecocks in a double header on Saturday at Noon. The games will be broadcast by the LSU Sports Network on 107.3 FM and www.LSUsports.net.
