Lee, Davis Lead Track & Field at Tyson Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — LSU freshman Muna Lee picked up a sprint double victory, claiming the 60 and 200-meter dashes Friday evening, while Walter Davis broke his own school record in the triple jump to lead the LSU track and field team on day one of the Tyson Invitational at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark.

A week after shattering the LSU freshman record in the 200-meter dash with an NCAA-leading time of 23.44 seconds, Lee demolished her previous best, as well as defending NCAA indoor 200-meter champion Miki Barber of South Carolina, blazing to a time of 23.17.

Running up against the rail in lane six on the banked track at the Tyson Center, Lee ran two perfect turns and accelerated past her competitors down the straightaway for her second straight victory in the event.

Earlier in the evening Lee picked up her second win in the last three weeks in the 60-meter dash, claiming the title in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7.38, just off her top mark of the season. Sa’Donna Thornton completed a 1-2 sweep for LSU, finishing second in a season-best time of 7.40.

Davis capped a strong night for LSU, winning the men’s triple jump with a mark of 55 feet 11 3/4 inches, bettering his previous mark of 55-6. Davis soundly beat fellow 2000 Olympian and former Arkansas great Robert Howard, now competing for Nike, who finished second with a jump of 55-6 1/4.

“We had another really strong outing tonight,” said LSU head coach Pat Henry. “For Muna and Walter to come up with the performances they did is just remarkable, but we also had a lot of other positive things happen. Our sprinters and jumpers both performed incredibly well tonight and I think we continue to get better as a team on both sides.”

Lolo Jones continued to impress in the short hurdles and finished second to Texas All-American Nicole Hoxie. Jones got out of the blocks quickly and led from the 20-meter mark almost to end before Hoxie made her move on the fifth hurdle and edged Jones at the line, posting a winning time of 8.30. Jones posted a time of 8.32, just off her top mark of the season.

Ronetta Smith continued to move up the NCAA provisional ladder, as the junior finished fourth in the women’s 400-meter dash with a season best time of 53.81. Myra Combs finished ninth, but picked up a provisional qualifying time as well, running an indoor personal best time of 54.62. Combs was already a provisional qualifier in the 200 and long jump.

On the men’s side, Alleyne Francique improved his NCAA provisional status, finishing fifth in the 400-meter dash in his first ever race on a banked track. Francique ran a time of 46.76, while Lueroy Colquhoun finished seventh in a time of 47.41.

Greg Scott finished fifth in the men’s 60-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 7.92 in the final. In the prelims he ran an NCAA provisional time of 7.89, however, his top mark of the season.

A pair of LSU football players made strong track and field debuts. Adrian Mayes just missed the last spot in the 60-meter hurdles final, running a time of 7.98 in the prelims, the second fastest time by a Tiger this season. Devery Henderson ran the fastest 60-meter dash time by a Tiger this season, a time of 6.90, that just missed qualifying for the final as well.

Day two of the Tyson Invitational on Saturday will primarily be comprised of comprised of professional athletes. The only LSU competitors on the day will be Walter Davis in the men’s long jump, Susanne Strunz in the women’s 3,000-meter run and both the men’s and women’s 4×400-meter relays.
