NORCROSS, Ga. — LSU Tiger singles players Dan Kiernan and 63rd-ranked Jesse Smatt advanced to the round of 32 of the Southeastern Conference Coaches Indoor Championships on Thursday, while the doubles team of Smatt and Tiger newcomer Sanjin Sadovich advanced to the round of 16 by virtue of a first-round victory.
Kiernan took three sets and a tiebreaker in the third to defeat Kentucky’s Johan Grunditz, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (4), while the No. 9-15 seed Smatt won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, over Ole Miss’ Martin Selin.
Kiernan will face Tennessee’s Mark Parsons in Friday’s second round and Smatt will meet Henrik Toft of Arkansas on Friday.
Four other Tigers, John Gray Pou, Bryan Fisher, Anthony Mateljan and Sadovich each lost in straight sets in Thursday’s first round of the 64-player singles draw.
In the 32-team doubles draw, Smatt and Sadovich advanced with a 8-5 victory over Brad Berry and Tim Shuler of Arkansas. Meanwhile, the teams of Fisher-Kiernan and Mateljan-Pou each lost their first-round doubles matches on Thursday.
Sadovich and Smatt will face the nation’s sixth-ranked team of Adam Carey and Mark Parsons of Tennessee, which advanced to the second round courtesy of a first-round bye.
Play in the 2001 SEC Coaches Indoor Championship continues with second and third-round singles play and second-round doubles play on Friday.
