NORCROSS, Ga. — Six members of the 14th-ranked LSU men’s tennis team will begin play at the 2001 SEC Coaches Indoor Championships on Thursday being held at the Racquet Club of the South in Norcross, Ga.

“This tournament is a good way to kick off the spring season with a bang,” said LSU head coach Jeff Brown. “There are so many high-ranked teams and individuals participating in this event that it will definitely help us prepare for the upcoming team competitions.”

The 2001 SEC Indoor Championships marks LSU’s opening tournament of the spring season, as well as the Tigers’ first competition since they took part in the ITA Region III Championships on November 5.

The SEC Indoor Championships will consist of both the top singles and doubles players in the Southeastern Conference. The tournament will feature a 64-member singles draw as well as a 32-team doubles draw.

Eight of the top-30 singles players in the nation are scheduled to compete in the indoor event including Georgia’s Matias Boeker, who is currently No. 3 in the nation.

Competing for the Tigers on Thursday will be juniors Jesse Smatt, Dan Kiernan and Anthony Mateljan, as well as sophomore John Gray Pou, and talented freshmen Bryan Fisher and Sanjin Sadovich. Sadovich, LSU’s highly-touted recruit from Vancouver, Canada, will be participating in his first competition as a Tiger this weekend. He joined the team at the beginning of the spring semester.

The first round of play at the 2001 SEC Coaches Indoor Championships is set to begin Thursday morning at 8 a.m. (Central time) in Norcross, Ga.
