Ferdinand Named SEC Player of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — LSU senior Marie Ferdinand was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week for her efforts in leading LSU to victories over Mercer and No. 6 Purdue, the conference office announced Monday.

Ferdinand, a first-team All-SEC performer a year ago, scored 20 points in the second half against the Boilermakers on Saturday to rally LSU from a 15-point second half deficit for the 62-55 win. Her lay up with 39.8 seconds remaining broke a 55-55 tie and put LSU up for good.

She finished the game with a game-high 25 points, nine rebounds and four assists. The win was the Lady Tigers fourth in a row and the first against a top 10 team this season.

On Tuesday, Ferdinand scored 22 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assists in the Lady Tigers 75-47 win over Mercer. The win was the 500th in the history of the program and the 50th straight over a non-conference opponent at home.

For the week, she averaged 23.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists.

This marks the first time in Ferdinand’s career that she has been named SEC Player of the Week. It is the first time since Katrina Hibbert earned the honor in the last week of January a season ago that an LSU player has been named the conference player of the week.
