ST. LOUIS — LSU offensive tackle Brandon Winey was named to The Sporting News’ All-America Third Team, the publication announced on Tuesday. In addition, six Tigers were named to the publication’s All-Southeastern Conference Team and three Tigers were named to the Freshman All-America Team.
LSU sophomore wide receiver Josh Reed and senior offensive lineman Louis Williams were both named to The Sporting News’ First-Team All-SEC squad, while Winey along with sophomore linebacker Bradie James and junior safety Ryan Clark and senior tight end Robert Royal were named to the Second Team.
Clark, a junior, started all 11 games at free safety and finished third on the team with 98 tackles in 2000 including four behind the line of scrimmage. He tied two other Tigers for the team lead with two interceptions and finished second on the team with nine passes broken up.
James, a Freshman All-SEC selection in 1999, started 10 games and registered 109 tackles to finished second on the team behind Trev Faulk (113). He led the Tigers with five quarterback sacks and was third on the team with eight tackles for loss (minus-32 yards).
Lavalais, a true freshman defensive end from Marksville, La., started the final three games of the season for the Tigers and played in nine. He made 22 tackles on the season including three behind the line and 17 unassisted. He also recorded one quarterback sack.
Redshirt running back LaBrandon Toefield and redshirt offensive lineman Rodney Reed made the First-Team Freshman All-America squad, while true freshman defensive lineman Chad Lavalais was named to the Third Team.
Reed, a converted running back, finished the season second all-time on LSU’s single-season receiving yards list with 1,127 on 65 receptions. He also caught 10 touchdown passes to lead the team. Reed finished led the conference and finished sixth in the nation with 102.45 yards per game and 21st with 5.91 receptions per game.
Royal, a senior tight end who expects to regain a year of eligibility and return in 2001, started 10 games in 2000 and finished fourth on the team with 22 receptions for 340 yards and five touchdowns.
Before injuring his ankle in the 10th game of the season, Toefield led the Tigers on the ground, rushing for 682 yards on 165 carries. He scored five touchdowns and also caught seven passes for 44 yards in 10 games.
Williams started the final 33 games of his career including 11 this season. He anchored LSU’s much-maligned offensive line at the center position in 2000. Williams also excelled in the classroom, where was a member of the 1998 and 1999 SEC Academic Honor Roll.
Winey, a fifth-year senior, battled through injuries to both himself and his fellow lineman to start nine of LSU’s 11 games in 2000. Rodney Reed, a redshirt freshman from West Monroe, La., started at both left guard and left tackle for the Tigers in 2000, filling in for one of three Tiger starters who missed most of the season with injuries.
