Booker Named LSWA Defensive Player of the Week

BATON ROUGE — Tulane quarterback Patrick Ramsey and LSU corner back Fred Booker captured this week’s Louisiana Sports Writers Association Player of the Week honors for their play this past weekend.

Nominees were made by the sports information staffs at the state’s football playing universities and then the nominees were voted on by a panel of media from throughout the state.

Ramsey, a junior from Ruston, tied the Tulane record with five touchdown passes in the Green Wave’s 50-38 win over Navy. He registered his third consecutive 300-yard passing day, completing 26-of-40 passes for 380 yards. Ramsey hit Adrian Burnette for three scores on passes of 27, 3 and 15 yards, with two other TD passes going to Kerwin Cook.

Ramsey led Tulane to touchdowns on each of its first four possessions of the game on five of its first six possessions in the game. The signal caller ran for 11 yards on five carries to total nearly 400 yards of total offense.

Booker recorded two tackles, including one for a 10-yard loss, intercepted one pass and recovered a fumble in the Tigers 20-9 win over Ole Miss at Oxford on Saturday. The pass interception came in the Ole Miss end zone and halted one Rebel scoring attempt, while the fumble recovery came deep inside LSU territory with the Tigers clinging to a 14-9 fourth quarter lead.

The tackle for the 10-yard loss by the Hammond senior came on a fake field goal attempt in the second quarter as he helped lead the Tigers to its first road win since 1998 as LSU held an SEC opponent without a touchdown on the road for the first time since 1997.

Other offensive nominees included: tailback Darren Brister of Louisiana-Lafayette, tailback Domanick Davis of LSU, quarterback Luke McCown of Louisiana Tech and the Southern pass and catch duo of quarterback Terrence Levy and wide receiver Michael Hayes.

The other defensive nominees were free safety Kyries Hebert of Louisiana-Lafayette, Tech linebacker Quincy Stewart and Tulane free safety Adrian Mitchell.
