ESTERO, Fla. — Two of the SEC women’s golf teams, Auburn and LSU, tied in the fourth place battle Sunday on the final day of the College Golf Foundation National Intercollegiate Match Play Team Championship.
Although the teams tied at 2.5-2.5 in the five-play singles match, Auburn won the match on the tiebreaker based on the number of holes won in the five matches.
LSU was able to get a 2UP win by Lindy Hitdlebaugh over Diana Ramage and Meredith Duncan scored a 3&1 win over Danielle Downey. Auburn got its two points from an 8&7 decision over Devon Day and Courtney Swaim’s 9&8 triumph over Erin Sarver.
That left it up to the final match between LSU senior Katy Harris and Auburn’s Celeste Troche, who is ranked third in the nation. Harris, who has had a very strong fall for the Tigers, was able to get a half in the match with Troche, sending the match to the tiebreaker.
LSU finishes with a 1-2 record in the event, tying for fifth place. Duke was the winner in the 2.5 tiebreaker over Georgia.
In the Saturday matches, Southern California had defeated LSU, 4-1, in the opening round with Katy Harris getting the lone LSU points, 1UP, over USC Mikaela Parmlid. In the consolation semifinal, LSU won a tiebreaker over Pepperdine with Meredith Duncan of LSU, a 5&4 winner over Lisa Chang and Lindy Hitdlebaugh a 6&5 winner over Darla Bleichenbacher. Erin Sarver got the tying half with Pepperdine’s Kate Waggoner.
The Lady Tigers will begin the spring season late in February at the University of Florida tournament in Gainesville.
