Lady Tigers Take Part in Match Play Championships

ESTERO, Fla. — The LSU women’s golf team closes its season with a chance to step away from stroke play for a weekend in the College Golf Foundation Intercollegiate Match Play Team Championships which begin Saturday here at the West Bay Club.

This event is played similar to the Ryder Cup and President’s Cup in that it is match play with the five players from each team playing singles matches. The team that wins three of the five advance to the next round.

The Lady Tigers are the No. 6 seed in the eight-team field and will meet third-seed Southern California in the opening round Saturday morning. LSU will meet either second seed Duke or No. 7 Pepperdine in either the winners or losers bracket later Saturday afternoon.

In the other half of the bracket, top seed Arizona, will meet eighth-seed Georgia and fourth-seed Auburn, faces fifth-seed Texas.

“This is a fun tournament for the players without a lot of the pressure of the stroke play events,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “It’s a chance to match up against some of the top players and let them go at it. We’ve had some success here in past years, but we always seem to have Duke waiting in the semifinals if we win the first match.”

LSU will have one change in its lineup as junior Erin Sarver will join senior Katy Harris, juniors Meredith Duncan and Lindy Hitdlebaugh and freshman Devon Day.

This will be the final event for the Lady Tigers until the end of February when the spring season begins at the University of Florida.
