HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. — The Mission Inn Resort was all wet as the incoming tropical disturbance George forced a long delay in the second round and finally put a premature end to the NCAA Fall Preview for women’s college golf teams at the El Campeon course outside Orlando.
A three-hour rain delay slowed things in the second round and play finished in a driving rain storm on Saturday and tournament officials decided to cancel Sunday’s play all together with the forecast calling for up to seven inches of rain in the area.
LSU remained where it was on Friday, in eighth place, after shooting a 310 on the final day on the par 73 layout. LSU finished at 617, 33-over par. Duke was the winner at 595, 11-over par, three shots better than Arizona at 598 with Tennessee at third at 601.
Katy Harris, the senior from South Bend, Ind., couldn’t sustain her first round success when she posted a 71 and had a five-over 78 in the second round to finish in a group at three-over 149. It marked the 12th career top 10 finish for Harris at LSU. Marta Prieto and Maria Beautell of Wake Forest had identical rounds of 72-74 – 146 and share the individual crown at even-par, one shot better than Cristina Baena of Arizona at 147.
Meredith Duncan of Shreveport posted a two-over 75 in the second round and finished in a group in 22nd at six-over 152 (77-75). Lesley McClurg had identical rounds of 78 and Lindy Hitdlebaugh had the final counting round of the day at six-over 79.
LSU will now have three weekends off before going to Knoxville, Tenn., for the annual Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Tournament beginning Oct. 13.
