BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s tennis team ended the 1999-2000 season as the third-ranked team in the Southwest Region Monday as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Wingspan.com rankings were released.
The University of Texas (No. 8 nationally) finished as the No. 1 team in the region, with Baylor (No. 19 nationally) coming in as the second-place team.
“We have an outstanding group of girls on this team and they did an outstanding job this season,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “We accomplished both of our goals this year by making it to the Sweet 16 and by finishing ranked among the top 25. Being ranked third in the region just makes me even more proud of this team’s accomplishments.”
The Lady Tigers, who finished the season as the 17th-ranked team in the nation, achieved their No. 3 regional ranking by having the best singles player in the region as well as the top doubles team.
LSU sophomore, Bruna Colosio, was ranked as the No. 1 singles player in the region, while the doubles combination of Colosio and Ana Paula Mores finished as the No. 1 ranked doubles team.
Colosio, who was recently named an All-American, ended the season as the ninth-ranked player in the nation. She finished with a 38-9 overall record and a 22-3 mark in dual matches.
The doubles duo of Colosio and Mores dominated the opposition this season by finishing with an overall record of 24-8 and a 12-3 mark versus top 50 opponents. The pair ended the year as the fourth-ranked doubles team in the nation and both received All-America honors for their performance during doubles competition.
