TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — LSU’s Britni Sneed’s complete game pitching performance and strong hitting from the top of the batting order propelled No. 7 LSU to its second consecutive Southeastern Conference regular season championship here Friday night.

The Tigers also won a fourth consecutive Western Division crown in the process of a 3-1 and 8-2 doubleheader sweep over the 11th ranked Alabama Crimson Tide.

LSU, assured of the number one seed in the SEC Tournament which begins Thursday in Columbus, Ga., concludes the regular season with another doubleheader against the Tide on Saturday beginning at 3 p.m. The games will be broadcast on the LSU Sports Network (107.3 FM in Baton Rouge) and on the
internet at www.LSUsports.net.

Sneed pitched the game one victory to run her record to 23-5, striking out five while allowing just four hits.

The top five in the LSU line-up were the big hitters getting all the runs home in game one and the eight runs in game two.

“It’s great to be a part of a team to win two consecutive SEC Championships,” said LSU Coach Glenn Moore. “Some team don’t ever have a chance to play for one, so we are excited to have two under our belt. This is just another step in our ladder to going to the tournament, the regional and hopefully to the College World Series.”

Game one was scoreless thru four innings with pitchers Britni Sneed and Shelley Laird dominating the game. In the fifth innings, LSU turned things around with three runs to take the lead. Senior shortstop Tara Asbill singled in left fielder Dee Douglas for the first run of the game. Senior third baseman Ashlee Ducote followed with a single that scored Asbill. Senior first baseman Shaunte’ Fremin launched a double down the left field line and picked up the RBI that sent Ducote across the plate.

The Tigers got out of a jam in the bottom of the sixth when the Tide got back-to-back hits and hit a batter to load the bases with one out. Second baseman Steph Hastings then fielded a double play to end the inning without a score.

Alabama answered with one run in the bottom of the inning but could not send anymore home and left the bases loaded.

The Tiger bats combined for seven hits off Laird who struck out 12 and walked one. Asbill was 1-for-1 with three sacrifice bunts and one RBI.

LSU took the lead early in game two with three runs off four hits. Douglas, Hastings and Asbill all crossed the plate in the top of the first.

Right fielder Trena Peel scored on a triple by Douglas in the second. Douglas made it home when Hastings reached on an error by shortstop Jennifer Reach. Ducote then also tripled to right center to send home Hastings.

The Tide scored a second run in the third when Ginger Jones singled in Reach.

Asbill answered back with a long ball over the left field fence to score two more in the fourth. The homer was Asbill’s 12th of the season to break the school single season record of 11 held by herself and former Tiger Tyra Perry.
