BATON ROUGE — The No. 7 LSU softball team completed a four game sweep of the Ladybacks of Arkansas on Saturday in Tiger Park to remain on top of the Southeastern Conference with a record of 20-2.
Trena Peel had a home run in each game as the Tigers won game one 3-1 and game two 9-0.
“I am proud of the way the girls played today,” said head coach Glenn Moore. “They kept their intensity and momentum up from last night’s wins. We are now looking forward to next week’s games.”
Arkansas took the lead early in the first inning of game one with a solo home run by catcher Jen Cirigliano.
LSU quickly answered back in the bottom of the second when right fielder Trena Peel hit a long ball over the right field fence to tie the game.
The Tigers took the lead in the fourth when Ashlee Ducote reached base on a fielding error by shortstop Tiffany Woolley and later scored on a throwing error by Cirigliano. Tara Asbill singled home Stacey Newton in the fifth to put LSU up 3-1.
LSU would hold on to the lead to take the victory from the Ladybacks. The Tiger bats combined for six hits off pitcher Rachel Talley. Peel’s home run was her third of the season.
Britni Sneed picked up her 20th win of the season to only five losses as she pitched seven innings. She allowed only two hits and walked none. Sneed had five strikeouts to give her a season total 220.
The Tigers scored first in game two when left fielder Dee Douglas made it home on a passed ball. Shaunte’ Fremin and Peel each singled home runs in the third to bring the score to 3-0.
Ducote hit a triple in the fourth to send home Asbill and Newton. Fremin then singled in Ducote to put LSU up by six.
In the bottom of the sixth, Ducote hit her second triple of the day to send home Asbill. Peel then finished her weekend off with a two run home run to right field to seal the victory for LSU 9-0.
LSU combined for 13 hits off Tammy Kincaid and Jennifer Bottoms. Tara Asbill was 3-for-4 in the contest, and Ducote was 3-for-4 with two triples and three RBI. Trena Peel was also 3-for-4 with a home run.
Ashley Lewis pitched five innings allowing only four hits and striking out five. Julie Stashko relieved her in the sixth. Lewis is now 18-3 for the season.
The Tigers will face Kentucky on Friday, April 28 for a double header in Tiger Park at 5 p.m.
