Tigers 2nd, Lady Tigers 5th at USTCA’s

AUSTIN, Texas — LSU concluded a strong weekend at the USTCA National Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadiumin Austin, Texas, as the men’s and women’s teams combined to win six events on the second day of competition. The Tigers finished second in the men’s team competition, while the Lady Tigers finished fifth in the women’s race.

The University of Texas swept both team titles. UCLA finished second in the women’s competition followed by Nebraska and South Carolina. Texas A&M finished third in the men’s competition followed by Nebraska and Southern California.

“We had a very good weekend, overall,” said LSU head coach Pat Henry. “Our top-shelf athletes proved what they are capable of doing this weekend and on a team level we were able to finish second in the men’s competition. Our sprinters and hurdlers looked very good, our men’s mile relay finished things up nicely and we did well in the jumps, so it was a very productive weekend.”

Russ Buller clinched second place for the Tigers with a victory in the pole vault, clearing 18 feet 6 + inches for his fourth straight win. In an event that finished an hour and a half after the running events concluded, Buller delivered with second place on the line. Buller needed to finish ahead of Jon Nance of Texas A&M to push the Tigers ahead of the Aggies for second place and did just that.

Buller entered the meet at 18-2 + and despite missing his first attempt, calmly negotiated the height on his second attempt, as Nance had already cleared the height. Buller then cleared 18-6 + on his first attempt, applying the pressure and Nance failed to clear the height giving the Tigers second place in the team competition.

Keisha Spencer would have broken her fourth stadium record in as many weeks had the wind been allowable. She did, however, improve to a perfect 10-0 on the year in the triple jump with a wind-aided mark of 46-5 1/4. The mark is the furthest jump by an LSU woman ever under all conditions but does not count as a school record because of the assistance of the wind.

Joyce Bates improved to 5-0 on the season in the 100-meter hurdles with her convincing victory. The senior All-American exploded out of the blocks to a decisive lead after the second hurdle, then completed a clean race in a season-best time of 12.79 seconds with the aid of a slight wind. It is the second fastest time in the world this season under all conditions.

Peta-Gaye Dowdie dominated the premier women’s sprinters in the nation to claim to the 200-meter title Saturday afternoon. Dowdie ran a time of 22.43 to win the 200-meter title, but a heavy wind of 4.7 meters per second, over the allowable 4.0, makes it ineligible for NCAA qualifying purposes.

Marcus Thomas continued his hot streak with an outdoor personal best NCAA automatic qualifying jump of 26-1 to win the long jump by nearly a foot, giving him his most significant win other than the SEC indoor title he won in March. Bashir Ramzy of Texas A&M finished second with a jump of 25-3 +.. Thomas later finished third in the triple jump with a mark of 52-2.

The Lady Tigers opened the day with a second place finish in the 4×100-meter relay, as the group of Bates, Valma Bass, Sa’Donna Thornton and Dowdie ran a time of 43.98 to finish just behind Texas which ran a season-best time of 43.89.

Dowdie nearly rallied the Lady Tigers with a remarkable anchor leg, but simply inherited too much of a deficit. Dowdie received the baton in third place and blew past South Carolina anchor Melissa Barber, but came up just short in her bid to catch Texas anchor Aleah Williams.

Moments later the Tigers finished third in the men’s short relay, as the group of Carlos Garcia, Derrick Brew, Deryell Patterson and Dwhyte Barrett ran a respectable 39.64 to finish behind defending NCAA champion South Carolina and Southern California.

Thornton, struggling through much of the outdoor season with a knee injury, came up with a strong showing in the 100-meter dash, finishing third in a time of 11.30, while Bass finished fifth in a time of 11.42. While both marks would move each up the NCAA provisional qualifying latter, a strong wind of 4.7 meters per second makes both times ineligible for NCAA qualifying purposes.

The Tigers concluded their day on the track by winning the 4×400-meter relay in a time of 3:06.21, just off their season-best time. Anchor Derrick Brew took the Tigers from third to first, running a brilliant final leg after Carlos Garcia, Deryell Patterson and Lueroy Colquhoun kick started the relay.

Brew also finished third in the 200 in a time of 20.59, while Patterson finished fourth in 21.00.

J.J. Barton gave World Championship silver medalist Mark Boswell all he could handle in the high jump. The two finished with identical marks of 7-2 1/4, but Boswell got the victory on a count back of clearances. The mark is a season-best for Barton and moves up the list of NCAA provisional qualifiers.

In other action in the field for LSU, Monique Freeman finished fourth in the long jump with a mark of 20-11 3/4, while Alex Forst finished sixth in the discus with a toss of 183-2.

In other action on the track for LSU on Saturday, Greg Scott finished fifth in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 13.85, as did Bridget Cusack in the women’s 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:03.78. Claudine Williams finished seventh in the 400-meter dash in a time of 54.01

LSU returns to action next weekend at the 106th running of the Penn Relays Carnival at venerable Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
