Castro Finishes 10th at NCAA Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — LSU sophomore Rodrigo Castro finished the 200-meter freestyle event in 10th place Friday at the NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships here in Minneapolis, Minn.

“Rodrigo did a really good job of competing today,” said LSU head coach Rick Meador. “He finished among the best in a very tough event in the 200-freestyle, and we are proud of what he has accomplished this season.”

Castro continued his string of top-10 finishes in the 200-meter freestyle competition at the NCAA Championships with Friday’s 10th-place performance. The returning All-American swam a time of 1:47.33 to take second-place in the consolation final. Last season Castro placed seventh in the event.

At the conclusion of the second day of the Men’s NCAA Championships, the Tigers remained in the top 25 by finishing at No. 23. The University of Texas will enter the final day of competition leading the meet with 350 total team points. LSU ended day two with 12 team points.

Corey Fox, LSU’s junior diver, finished the 3-meter springboard event in 17th-place on the second day of the NCAA Championships. Fox scored 501.60 points in the event but failed to qualify for the final round of competition. In Thursday’s 1-meter diving championship Fox earned the Tigers five points by placing 12th.

In the 100-meter backstroke event, LSU senior Neal Satterly finished with a time of 54.67 to end the competition in 23rd place.

The NCAA Championships will conclude Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center. Preliminary heats will begin at 11 a.m. Central Time, with the championship finals set for 7 p.m.
