AUSTIN, Texas — LSU diver Jamie Watkins won the 2000 All-American three-meter competition Wednesday evening at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
Watkins finished with 517.90 total points, more than 30 points better that Stanford’s McKenze Murphy who finished second with 487.40 points.
“Jamie did an outstanding job of diving tonight,” LSU head diving coach Scott Reich said. “It was definitely one of the better performances that I have seen in a while. She hit the big dives when she needed to and she didn’t make very many mental mistakes. I’m extremely proud of the way she competed today.”
Lady Tiger senior Gretchen Mury was the only other LSU diver to advance to the finals of the women’s competition. She finished sixth in the preliminaries before jumping one spot in the semi-finals to finish in fifth place with a score of 459.05.
On the men’s side, Tiger junior Corey Fox finished fourth overall with a score of 491.45 in the one-meter competition, just five points behind Jesse Even of Texas A&M who took third.
Erik Petursson, the other Tiger diver to make it to the finals, wound up in sixth place with a score of 474.20.
Both the LSU men’s and women’s divers will compete today as the All-American Diving Championships continue with the men’s three-meter competition and the women’s one-meter competition.
