HOUSTON, Texas – – The 25th ranked Lady Tiger swimming and diving team outscored the Rice Owls Saturday afternoon in Houston, Texas, 140-121.

“The team did a good job of swimming today,” said head coach Rick Meador. “I was impressed with the way they rebounded from yesterday’s tough loss and turned in a strong performance against this good Rice squad.”

The Lady Tigers improved their record to 7-2 on the season and have one dual meet remaining until the SEC Championships, which will take place in Auburn, Ala. on February 16-19. LSU’s Southeastern Conference record is 2-1 in the 1999-2000 season.

The Lady Tiger’s junior swimmer, Mandy Leach, won three events on the day as she placed first in the 50, 200, and 500-yard freestyle events. In the 200-free, she set the pool record by swimming an outstanding time of 1:51.78. The previous pool record was 1:51.83, and had been set in January of 1995 by A. Leporis.

Freshman Suzie Flook, along with sophomores Ali Petersen and Cissy Schepens, were all victorious in two events against the Owls. Flook won the 100 and 200-yard butterfly events in times of 57.46 and 2:03.99, respectively.

Petersen dominated both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events, while Schepens finished first in both the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke competitions. Lindsey Mooney was the other LSU swimmer to take first place as she was victorious in the 400-yard individual medley. She won the competition with a time of 4:28.35.

The LSU Lady Tiger swimming and diving team will next be in action at home in the LSU Natatorium against the Florida State Seminoles on Saturday, February 5.

It will be the final home meet of the season for the Tigers as well as Senior Day, where the six LSU seniors will be honored for their hard work and dedication to the team.
