BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s track and field team, fresh off an impressive season-opening performance at the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational, has taken sole possession of the No. 1 ranking in the nation in the latest Trackwire national poll.
The Lady Tigers were tied with defending national champion Texas in last week’s preseason poll.
Behind strong performances from Keisha Spencer and Bianca Rockett in the triple jump, Monique Freeman in the long jump, Joyce Bates in the 60-meter hurdles and Sa’Donna Thornton in the 60-meter dash, the Lady Tigers picked up an additional three points in this week’s poll. Spencer’s 45 foot 10 inch effort in the triple jump earned her the Trackwire Female Athlete of the Week.
LSU leads this week’s Trackwire national poll with 73 points to 70 for Texas. UCLA remains in third with 62 points followed by South Carolina and Arkansas to round out the top five.
At the same time, the Tigers fell one spot from ninth to 10th in the men’s rankings, but remain with the same point total, 17. Arkansas continues to lead the men’s poll, although only by a single point over Stanford, while Florida ranks third followed by Auburn and Texas.
LSU returns to action on Friday night at the SEC Quadrangular in Fayetteville, Ark., against Arkansas, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt.
