Saban to Coach East-West Shrine Bowl

BATON ROUGE – LSU head coach Nick Saban will serve as associate coach on the East squad in the 75th annual East-West Shrine Bowl to be played January 15 at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto, California.

The game will be televised nationally on ESPN beginning at 3 p.m. Central Time (1 p.m. Pacific).

Former LSU players Rondell Mealey, Mark Roman and Alcender Jackson are among seven players who have been chosen from Southeastern Conference schools to play for the East squad. Other SEC players include quarterback Doug Johnson and offensive tackle Cooper Carlisle of Florida, linebacker Orantes Grant of Georgia and running back Anthony White of Kentucky.

Steve Spurrier of Florida will serve as head coach of the East Team and Butch Davis of Miami will be another associate coach for that squad. The West coaching staff will be comprised of head coach Bruce Snyder of Arizona State and associate coaches Dennis Franchione of TCU and Larry Smith of Missouri.

The East-West Shrine Bowl benefits Shriners Hospitals for Children, a network of 22 hospitals throughout North America that have provided free medical care to over 600,000 children under the age of 18.

Shriners Hospitals are supported solely by private contributions and fund-raising projects such as the East-West Shrine Football Classic and Pageant.
