HILTON HEAD, S.C. — The LSU Lady Tigers golf team has three players in the top six individually and the 13th-ranked team stands in third place after 36 holes of the Rolex/Golf World/Palmetto Dunes Invitational Saturday at the Arthur Hills at Palmetto Hall Country Club.
The Tigers fell out of the lead they held on Friday, but still remain in the chase as top-ranked Duke moved to the lead with a two-day total of 9-over par 585 (291-294). The Blue Devils are three shots up on Arizona (588) and eight up on LSU at 593 after rounds of 290 and 303.
LSU’s 593 total is tied for the ninth best 36-hole score in LSU women’s golf history.
The Tigers were only able to get three strong scores on the second day, unlike the four scores on Friday, but after 36 holes, Katy Wilkinson, Lisette Lee and Meredith Duncan are all in the hunt for the individual crown.
Wilkinson, the junior from South Bend, Ind., posted her 17th career LSU round of par or better with a two-under score of 70 to stand in a tie for fourth place at even par 144 (74-70). Wilkinson is just two shots out of the 2-under par leading score of 142 set by Jenna Daniels of Arizona and Beth Bauer of Duke. Both players have shot duplicate 1-under par rounds of 71 each day.
Lee, the Tiger senior from Gretna, and Duncan, the sophomore from Shreveport, are two shots behind Wilkinson in a tie for sixth place at 2-over 146. Lee shot a two-over par 74 to go with an even par round on Friday of 72, while Duncan followed her career low 2-under 70 on Friday with a 6-over 76 on Saturday.
The Tigers had to count one of two 80 scores posted on Saturday, with Rebecca Barrow’s 83, the final counting score.
“We just need to keep going,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “We are in a very good position and Katy, Lisette and Meredith all have a chance to possibly win this thing. They are all at the top of their game and hopefully we can get that from them one more day and then get something from the four or five positions that will allow us to get to or keep near the top. We are playing very strong golf and that’s what you have to do against this type of field.”
