BATON ROUGE, La. — The LSU baseball program received national letters-of-intent Monday, Nov. 15, from five recruits, bringing the Tigers’ total of fall signees to 17. Joining the LSU program are shortstop Aaron Schroeder of San Jacinto (Texas) College; pitcher Mark Phillips of Hanover (Pa.) High School; first baseman Mike Napoli of Flanagan High in Pembroke Pines, Fla.; pitcher Nick Masset of Pinellas Park High in Largo, Fla.; and outfielder Mark Folsom of West Orange High in Winter Garden, Fla.
Schroeder, a 5-10, 185-pound Houston native, hit .435 last season at San Jacinto JC with 19 homers and 72 RBI, as led the Gators to the runners-up position in the 1999 JUCO World Series. His San Jacinto teammates included two current LSU players, catcher Ryan Jorgensen and pitcher Heath McMurray.
Phillips, a 6-3, 200-pound left-hander, enjoyed a sensational junior season at Hanover High, recording a 10-2 mark with a 0.57 ERA in 73.2 innings. He registered 152 strikeouts and 43 walks, and he was named the 1999 York County Player of the Year.
Napoli, a 6-1, 210-pound all-state performer, hit .576 last season with 14 homers and 52 RBI. He has a .490 career batting average at Flanagan High with 23 homers and 102 RBI.
Masset, a 6-4, 185-pound right-hander, posted a 6-2 record last season with a 2.10 ERA. He worked 50 innings, collecting 56 strikeouts and 18 walks.
Folsom is a 6-5, 215-pound prospect who projects as a clean-up hitter in the LSU line-up. He finished second last summer in the home run hitting contest at the prestigious Area Code Games, which showcases the nation?s top high school talent.
The signees are scheduled to enroll at LSU in the fall of 2000. The Tigers expect to add more players during the fall signing period, which ends Wednesday.
