BATON ROUGE — The LSU tennis team travels to Athens, Ga., this weekend to compete in the Southern Collegiate Championships hosted by the University of Georgia.
“This is one of the better fall tournaments in the South,” said LSU coach Jeff Brown. “It is a good opportunity for the players to see the facilities there and become more comfortable with them for NCAA’s.”
Athens is the host of the 2000 NCAA men’s tennis championships next spring.
Representing the Tigers in the Singles Division I draw will be Ajay Ramaswami and Ed Rubin. Ramaswami earned a bye in the first round while Rubin faces Alejandro Bisogno of Mercer.
A year ago, Ramaswami, then playing for Charleston Southern, beat LSU player Dan Kiernan in the Division II singles final.
In the Division II singles this year is freshman Mario Alvarez, and sophomores Anthony Mateljan and Jesse Smatt. Alvarez faces Thiago Gomdin of Murray State in the first round.
Both Mateljan and Smatt received first round byes and will play Thursday afternoon.
