BATON ROUGE – – The LSU swimming and diving teams swept Friday’s double-dual meet with the Houston Cougars and Louisiana at Monroe in the LSU Natatorium.
The mens squad won its opening meet of the season 138-91 over the ULM Indians, while the Lady Tigers improved their overall record to 3-0 (1-0 in SEC) by defeating both Houston 65-47, and ULM 73-34.
“We played pretty good today,” said head coach Rick Meador. “In spots it even looked as if we were in mid-season form. Hopefully, we have done a good job of setting ourselves up for the tough SEC competition that is coming up next week when we face Alabama.”
The Lady Tigers captured first-place honors in every swimming event of the evening. The team was led by senior captain Melissa Knox and sophomore Mandy Leach who combined for three first-place finishes.
Leach won both the 50-yard (24.16) and the 100-yard freestyle (51.29) events for the Lady Tigers, while her teammate Knox placed first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:21.99.
Freshmen Julie Hughes and Chere Richards also finished in first place for the Lady Tigers. Hughes won the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.72) and Richards swam the best time of the day in the 200-yard I.M. (2:07.44).
In the men’s dual-meet against Louisiana at Monroe, the Tigers dominated as well. The Indians were only able to win one of the 13 events.
Leading the Tigers were junior captain Ken Kuhn, sophomore All-American Rodrigo Castro, and diver Erik Petursson. Each was victorious in his two events.
Kuhn placed first in the 50-yard (20.78) and 100-yard freestyle (46.17) competitions, Castro blew away the opposition in the 200-yard (1:40.30) and the 500-yard freestyle events (4:36.19), and Petursson swept the diving competitions with scores of 290.85 (3-meter) and 307.25 (1-meter).
The LSU swimming and diving teams will next be in action Saturday, November 6 as they travel to Alabama to take on the SEC rival Crimson Tide.
