BATON ROUGE — Former LSU All-Americans LaDonia Hughes and Trena Peel have both continued their playing careers as members of the National Pro Fastpitch League that began play last week.
Fresh from helping the Tigers to a third place finish in the Women’s College World Series, Hughes joined the New England Riptide out of Lowell, Mass. The 2004 second-team All-American outfielder is starting for the Riptide, who are currently 1-5 in league play.
Peel, a 2002 All-American, is a member of the Akron Racers out of Akron, Ohio. The outfielder is starting for the Racers, who are currently 3-3 in the league. In a game at home against the Riptide on Monday, Peel doubled in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning earning her the Summa Health Care System Play of the Game honor.
The six-team National Pro Fastpitch league gives over 90 women the opportunity to play fastpitch at the professional level. With thousands of athletes playing fastpitch at the collegiate level, this is the first opportunity for them to play professionally since 2000 when the league operated under the name Women
