Sylvia Fowles Quotes
USA Women’s Basketball

A Question and Answer Session with LSU women’s basketball center Sylvia Fowles after her return from two weeks in Italy with the United States Senior Women’s Basketball team.

How was your experience on the USA Basketball Team?
“It was outstanding. Just having the opportunity to be around veterans and learn new things and to be able to bring things back to your own system is always a positive point. Just being around the veterans made everything so easy.”

At what point did you realize you were playing with the Women’s Olympic Basketball team?
“It may seem like that from the outside in, but to tell you the truth I have not thought about it like that because everyone made me feel comfortable for who I was and the things that I have done.”

Did you think statistically you would do that well?
“No not really. I never know my limitations and the things that I can do. I always have coaches in my ear telling me what to do. But you never notice it for yourself. Just to sit back and watch myself in the tournament made me think I did fairly well.”

What did you improve on in your game?
“My free throws. One of the coaches made me work everyday on my free throws and making sure I put the ball on the right side of my body instead of the left.  We also worked on my jump shot to make sure I do not shoot on the way down, but instead at my highest peek.”

What Italy was like?
“I never had been to Italy before. It was what I expected. It was a very beautiful place. We had a lot of fun there. It was some what Americanized. The people understand you there and wanted to know your language just like I wanted to know there’s. The food was good. It wasn’t so bad. They fed us 6 course meal, and I could not eat that much. I would have 1 course and be done. But it was a great experience.”

What was your favorite thing about the experience?
“I had time to learn about the Italy coaching and spending time with my teammates on a off the court.”

Was there a veteran that took you under their wing?
Actually a lot of veterans took me under their wing. The ones that stand out are Katie Smith and Taj McWilliams. But everyone helped out and stood out.”

Was it a thrill to meet them?
“Yes it was a thrill to meet them and watch them play. But just to have an opportunity to actually be there with them and experiencing the things they do on their time was good.”
