Wells Earns Second All-SEC Golf Honor

BATON ROUGE — LSU men’s golf standout Chris Wells has been named a Second-Team All-Southeastern Conference selection for the second time in his illustrious career as announced by the league office Monday.

Wells, who also earned Second-Team All-SEC recognition as a sophomore in 2005, becomes LSU’s first two-time representative on the all-conference squad since Heath West was a back-to-back second-team member in 2003 and 2004.

“Chris has had a great career here at LSU, and he’s very deserving of this honor,” said LSU head coach Chuck Winstead. “Chris has been a class act on and off the course, and he’s everything you look for in a student-athlete. He’s been an outstanding student and a great ambassador for LSU.”

The senior from Mobile, Ala., has cracked the lineup in all nine tournaments for the Tigers this season as he leads the squad with a 73.1 stroke average and a pair of Top 10 finishes on the year.

Wells proved to be the Tigers’ top performer during the spring as he earned his best finish in nearly two years by tying for third place at the Seminole Intercollegiate in March. He also posted his best career finish at the SEC Championships a week ago by tying for 23rd.

Wells was also named one of eight members of the fourth-annual SEC Men’s Golf Good Works Team last week for his outstanding community service this past year. The SEC sponsors a Good Works Team for all 20 league sanctioned sports as each looks to highlight a student-athlete from each school who exhibits superior community service efforts.

Tennessee’s Jim Kelson was named SEC Coach of the Year in his ninth season with the squad after guiding the Volunteers to their first SEC championship since 1990 and third in team history.

Florida sophomore Billy Horschel was named the SEC Player of the Year in just his second season at the collegiate level, while Hudson Swafford of Georgia proved to be the league’s top newcomer this season as he was voted SEC Freshman of the Year.

Alabama standout Joseph Sykora rounds out the major award winners in the conference as he was recognized as the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second straight season as he is slated to graduate with an impressive 4.21 GPA in accounting with a cumulative 4.0 GPA in his career.
