Bradford, Turner Named LSU Athletes of the Week

BATON ROUGE — Pitchers Jared Bradford and Emily Turner were named the LSU Male and Female Athletes of the Week Wednesday following a vote by a local media panel.

Bradford earned a save and a win in consecutive days to lead LSU to a series victory over No. 15 Mississippi State in Starkville last weekend. The junior from Hueytown, Ala., worked nine innings of Saturday’s 6-5 win, recording the final three outs on 15 pitches to earn his team-best fifth save of the season.

Bradford then came back on Sunday as LSU’s starting pitcher and limited the Bulldogs ? the SEC’s top-hitting club with a .341 average ? to one run on six hits in 7.1 innings with two walks and five strikeouts. He fired 102 pitches to earn his seventh victory, which also leads the LSU staff.

Bradford is now 7-2 on the season with a 3.60 ERA and five saves. In 70 innings, he has recorded 15 walks and 60 strikeouts and opponents are batting just .248 against him.

Turner did not allow a hit in her nine innings of work during the Tigers’ SEC series sweep of Arkansas last weekend. The senior All-American threw her first career no-hitter with a seven-inning no-no on Saturday before picking up a save in the Tigers’ win on Sunday.

In a week that also included Turner allowing just two hits and no runs against Southern midweek, the Chula Vista, Calif., native held opponents to a .053 batting average with no extra-base hits. She averaged nine strikeouts per seven innings of work on the week.
