BATON ROUGE — Senior Chris Wells has been named to the fourth-annual Southeastern Conference Men’s Golf Good Works Team for the first time in his LSU career, it was announced by the league office this weekend.
Wells is one of eight student-athletes named to this year’s team, which includes a member from each school except Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky and Vanderbilt.
The Mobile, Ala., native has participated in a number of community service projects this year sponsored by the Shaquille O’Neal CHAMPS/Life Skills Program, including the fourth-annual “Stride & Ride” event held in conjunction with the Muscular Dystrophy Association which raised $18,000 for muscular dystrophy research.
He participated in the annual Halloween BOOzar in which he played games, signed autographs and passed out candy to local children, while he also took part in the school’s annual Christmas Toy Drive where he helped raise money to buy clothes and toys for underprivileged boys in the Baton Rouge community.
In addition, Wells took time off the course to visit children in the Children’s Ward at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge.
The SEC sponsors a Good Works Team for all 20 league sanctioned sports as each looks to highlight a student-athlete from each school who gives back to their respective community with superior service efforts.
Wells has proven to be the Tigers’ top performer this spring as he has cracked the lineup in all nine of LSU’s tournaments this season, while he leads the team with a 73.1 stroke average in 27 competitive rounds. He is also tied for the team lead with a pair of Top 10 finishes, including a third-place finish at the Seminole Intercollegiate in March.
Wells is set to wrap up his collegiate career this spring as the Tigers close the regular season at the Linger Longer Invitational at Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Ga., from May 13-14. He earned Second-Team All-SEC honors in 2005, while he has been named an LSWA First-Team All-Louisiana selection the past two seasons.
